Getting There

Finding Charco Prieto is part of the adventure. The waterfall is hidden in the hills of Bayamón, about a 40-minute drive from San Juan. Use a GPS app like Google Maps or Waze and search for “Cascada Charco Prieto, Bayamón.” The drive starts on main highways, then winds through smaller local roads (PR-812 and PR-879) into a quiet, country neighborhood.

Our Tip: The start of the trail is not well marked and a little difficult to find. When we did this hike, we knew we were close when we saw several cars parked along the side of the road near a sharp curve. That’s a good sign you’ve found the right spot! The trailhead starts near the backyard of an abandoned house.  Cell service can be spotty, so download your map ahead of time if you can.

What to Expect on the Hike

Charco Prieto may only be half a mile from where you park, but it packs a lot of adventure into a short distance. You’ll have to cross over the creek a few times and make your way over rocks and muddy spots. Ropes are tied to trees to help you up and down the steepest sections,  so be ready for a bit of climbing.

Along the way, you’ll pass several pools of water where you can cool off. Watch for lizards and sometimes small snakes, especially if you stick to the brush. Some hikers find it easier to wade up the river for part of the journey.

A Fun Surprise: On our hike, a friendly local dog joined us for a part of the trail, making the adventure even more memorable.

When you reach the end of the trail, you’ll see why people love Charco Prieto. The waterfall is about 130 feet tall, spilling over the rocks in several beautiful tiers. To say it is stunning is an understatement. There’s a peaceful pool at the bottom and plenty of large rocks to sit on, relax, or take photos. Some people even swim across the pool for a different view.
